In September 1975, a group of educators and researchers with a passion for literacy convened the inaugural meeting of the Reading Association of Ireland. In the fifty years that have passed since, the Association has shared practice, debated big ideas and led the conversation on literacy in Ireland and further afield. It is time to look back and to look ahead. At this year’s annual conference, we will take stock: looking at progress in literacy nationally and internationally, are there changes and advancements of which we should be particularly proud? What requires further attention? We also seek to project forward: what are the known unknowns (or indeed the unknown unknowns) that the next fifty years of literacy education have in store? What do we need to do to ensure that literacy achievement and engagement is a reality…
